Love Family is a new diverse picture book from Loving Lion Books that can be customized to reflect the little reader’s family. Told from the perspective of a young girl, this warm story tells of her excitement and joy on family dinner night.
I can smell the food and fun that’s coming. It’s family dinner night. Aunts, uncles, cousins and grandmother are all coming over for a big meal.
After waiting patiently for the family’s arrival, the little girl enjoys playing with her cousins, from running races and jumping ropes to telling jokes and drawing silly pictures. When the uncle turns on music the children dance and twirl freely in the garden whilst dinner is being prepared inside by the adults.
The colourful and detailed watercolour illustrations ooze warmth and reflect the love that is present at this special family get-together perfectly.
Grandmother leaves first with kisses to all and leans in close to me. “Our family is love,” she whispers, and I nod and nod.
The fact that you can customize the skin colour and hair of the girl, her parents and her grandmother adds to the charm of this sweet book. Young readers will love seeing a family that resembles their own in the engaging illustrations.
On the last page of the book, children are invited to place a photo or a drawing of their own families.
Love Family is exactly the kind of multicultural children’s book that the world needs more of: every-day-life stories about children of colour just being themselves.
The book is suitable for ages 4 to 8. You can customize and order it from Loving Lion Books.
